Supervision Updates

The Supervision category in the Ontario Physical Activity Safety Standards in Education (OPASSE) has been updated to provide school boards and teachers/intramural supervisors/coaches with direction on the requirements of supervision for each activity in OPASSE.

Supervision is the vigilant oversight of an activity for management or direction. All physical activities have inherent risks and the more effectively they are supervised, the safer they become for students.

The supervision updates provide:

  • Updated terminology from Constant Visual Supervision to Direct Supervision to align with On-Site Supervision and In-the-Area Supervision which describe where the teacher is located. However, the purpose of each type of supervision did not change.
  • Enhanced description and examples of when each type of supervision is required.
  • Increased information on the roles and responsibilities of qualified instructors/volunteers when assisting the teacher.
  • Specific direction for activities that transition from one type of supervision to another during different elements of the activity.
