Modify the Safety Standards

The review process is as follows:

  • Submissions due to Ophea no later than July 15th for consideration at the Safety and Injury Prevention Advisory Committee (SIPAC) during the upcoming school year.
  • Request is accepted or denied and the requestor is notified.
  • Research and development of new page occurs.
  • New/revised pages are released for the following school year.

The following Values/Guiding Principles should be reflected in the development and implementation of all activities associated with the Ontario Physical Activity Safety Standards.

  • Physical Activity Focus. The promotion and encouragement of physical activity and active living for children and youth (in a safe, risk-managed environment) must be central to all decisions made regarding the Ontario Physical Activity Safety Standards in Education.
  • Risk Management Processes. The Ontario Physical Activity Safety Standards in Education are a risk management document. Any updates/rewrites to the standards need to follow the process of risk management, which involves five steps:
    • identification of exposures to injury;
    • examination of the feasibility of alternate practices;
    • selection of the best risk management practices;
    • implementation of the selected practice; and
    • monitoring results and making improvements where necessary.
  • School Boards are Unique. Implementation, updates to, and any rewrites of the standards must take into account the unique needs of different School Boards, allowing localization.
  • Consideration of Intramural Clubs and Activities and Interschool Athletics. It is important that the intramural clubs and activities and interschool athletics components be treated as an integral part of the Ontario Physical Activity Safety Standards in Education and continue to be supported.
