Take time to learn about the individual needs of the students in your class, including medical conditions and any accommodations/modifications that may affect a student’s participation in physical education, intramural, or interschool activities. This includes being aware of conditions such as asthma, anaphylaxis, diabetes, or epilepsy, as well as knowing which students use orthopedic devices and the strategies needed to support students. OPASSE emphasize that this awareness helps educators plan safe activities, respond effectively in emergencies, and ensure all students can participate safely and confidently.
Ophea’s Supporting Students with Prevalent Medical Conditions eLearning Module is designed to help school boards meet their responsibility to provide annual training and resources on prevalent medical conditions for all school staff, as outlined in PPM 161: Supporting Children and Students with Prevalent Medical Conditions in Schools. The module builds educator knowledge of legal requirements, roles and responsibilities, and effective strategies to support inclusion, daily management, and emergency response for students with anaphylaxis, asthma, diabetes, and epilepsy. By applying this learning, educators are better prepared to plan physical education, intramural, and interschool programs that are safe, inclusive, and responsive to the diverse health needs of their students.
Ophea's e-Learning modules are free to access with a free Ophea.net account and are available school year-round.
