Equipment
- Correctly fitting and Transport Canada-approved personal flotation devices (P.F.D.)/lifejackets, with whistle attached, must be worn and properly secured at all times when approaching and while on the water.
Clothing/Footwear/Jewellery
- Appropriate swimwear and footwear must be worn. Wet suits as required.
Facilities
- Water temperature is above 15 degrees Celsius (59 degrees Fahrenheit).
- Water area must be open with no visual obstructions to Teachers/Monitors.
Environmental Considerations
Special Rules/Instructions
- All Qualified Instructors must be knowledgeable of the established emergency and safety procedures for their site. Qualified Instructors must outline emergency and safety procedures to all participants and other trip Teachers/Monitors.
- Students must be in buddy pairs for instruction and to assist in monitoring buddy/position.
Supervision
- On-Site Supervision is required by the Teacher when a Qualified Instructor who has training in the relevant skills set for experienced in Wind Surfing is providing safety and initial skill instruction, and monitoring.
- On-Site Supervision is required when students are moving and handling equipment (e.g., lifting, portaging carries, launching and removing watercraft(s) to and from the water).
- On-Site Supervision is required for the duration of all other components of the activity (e.g., warm-ups/cool downs, application of the skills, games).
- A Lifeguard must be on-site at all times.
Supervision/Monitoring Ratios
- 1 Teacher/Monitor per 20 students, with students in partners with a maximum of 10 students on the boards at once.

First Aid
- At least one Teacher/Monitor must have one of the following current first aid certifications:
- National Lifeguard (N.L.) certificate
- St. John Ambulance’s Emergency First Aid with CPR C + AED
- St. John Ambulance Wilderness First Aid
- Canadian Red Cross Emergency First Aid & CPR (Level C)
- Canadian Red Cross Wilderness and Remote First Aid
- Canadian Ski Patrol First Aid Certificate
- Equivalent to any of the above.
Safety Craft
- A safety boat that is rescue-capable (provides appropriate speed and stability) must be in the water and accessible while students are board sailing.
- If the body of water being used for instruction does not allow the use of a safety boat (too shallow, pool, etc.) then the Qualified Instructor(s) must be able to reach students as quickly as in the case of a safety boat being present. In the latter situation, the water must be wadable by the Qualified Instructor.
- If the safety boat is a motorized craft then the operator of the motorized safety boat must have a Pleasure Craft Operator Card.
- The operator of the safety boat, whether craft is motorized or not, must have experience in navigating the craft.
- If a safety boat is being used then there must be at least one person in the safety boat who meets the first aid certification.
