Equipment

All equipment must be checked before use and repaired as necessary.

A process must be established where equipment needing repair is identified and removed from use.

Equipment use must be based on skills that are taught.

Place a utility mat directly below high apparatus (for example, chinning board, peg board).

Audio devices must not pose a risk to students' safety (for example, when students need to be aware of their external surroundings, when spotting other students).
Clothing/Footwear/Jewellery
- No exposed hanging jewellery permitted.
Facilities

Weight room must be locked when unsupervised.

Floor surface must not allow weights to slide or slip.

To provide free flow of motion, allow adequate space between weight-training activities.
- Adequate storage for free weight plates must be in place.
- A process must be developed to regularly disinfect equipment.
Special Rules/Instructions
- Safety rules associated with the activity must be clearly communicated to the students prior to participation and reviewed/enforced as necessary throughout the activity.
- All students must be instructed in the proper lifting techniques and safety procedures (for example, spotting).
- Stress correct body alignment for injury prevention.
- All programs must be individualized.
- A grouping system, (for example, two students must be present at all times, in the fitness facility, and when lifting free-weights over the body, a buddy or spotter must be present for safety), designed to ensure that students remain visible, connected, and accountable to one another must be implemented during all activities that involve movement, dispersion, or the use of specialized spaces.
- Skills and procedures must be reviewed regularly.
- Free-weight plates must be secured in place before using.
Supervision
- On-Site Supervision is required during the use of free weights and weight machines.
- In-the-Area Supervision is required for the duration of all other components of the activity when weights and weight machines are at a combination of locations.
