As stated in the safety standards, prior to student participation in physical activities, teachers, coaches, and intramurals supervisors must:
- be aware of student medical conditions that may impact full participation;
- provide students with information regarding concussion prevention and the importance of reporting symptoms related to a suspected concussion; and
- (for interschool athletics) confirm student’s review of the Concussion Awareness Resources and Code of Conduct.
Additionally, the Tools and Resources includes a section on Health and First Aid that includes Medical Conditions. This information highlights the importance of teachers, coaches and intramural supervisors referring to their school/school board's policies/protocols related to medical conditions, being aware of student medical information, and any students with individualized Plans of Care.
This information on medical conditions also includes additional supports on:
- Asthma;
- Concussion;
- Sudden Arrhythmia Death Syndrome (SADS); and
- Procedures to be followed when a student misses physical education class/practice or game due to an injury or illness requiring professional medical attention.
