Learn More about Creating Safe and Inclusive Physical Activity Environments for Students

Creating safe and inclusive physical activity learning environments where all students feel welcomed, valued, and able to participate begins with intentional safety practices. Ophea’s Disability-Centred Movement: Supporting Inclusive Physical Education e-Learning Module supports school and board staff in understanding how to integrate inclusion and equity considerations into safety planning for physical education, intramural, and interschool activities.

This e-Learning module was updated in summer 2025 to align and connect with the Ontario Physical Activity Safety Standards in Education (OPASSE) and reinforce how inclusive planning and accommodations directly contribute to student safety by ensuring that all learners can participate meaningfully and confidently in physical activity.

Key Learning Connections to Safety

By completing this e-Learning module, participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Increase awareness of a variety of disabilities and accommodations that promote safe, inclusive participation in physical activity settings.

  • Understand and apply accommodations that enhance safety and support equitable participation for all students.

  • Explore practical strategies and scenarios to confidently plan inclusive, safety-focused programs.

  • Strengthen collaboration through frameworks like the Individual Education Plan (IEP) process to ensure consistent, safe program planning.

Participation in this e-Learning module supports educators and school boards in building a shared commitment to student safety and inclusion. Together, these practices contribute to every learner having equitable access to safe physical activity experiences at school.
