Prevention and Proactiveness

An ongoing focus on prevention and being proactive will assist with the establishment and maintenance of a safe, inclusive, and equitable learning environment for students to be physically active. Content in OPASSE can support:

During the Planning Process:

  • Being familiar with the school board’s policies on Safety and Concussion, the risks of a concussion or other potential injuries associated with the activity/sport, and how to minimize those risks.
  • Ensuring the protective equipment identified is available for all students to participate safely (e.g., helmets, padding, goggles).

Prior to the Lesson:

  • Completing a safety check of gymnasium and outdoor facilities as well as equipment
  • Communicating with students, and parents/guardians in some instances, the specific safety strategies expected/ways to minimize risks prior to participating in the activity.

During the Lesson:

  • Anticipating safety concerns and making informed safety decisions throughout the activity.
  • Enforcing the safety strategies expected/ways to minimize risk throughout the entire duration of the activity (including setting up and take down of equipment).

After the Lesson

  • Reflecting on the lesson and any potential safety concerns that arose to apply to the planning process of future lessons.
  • Communicating any safety concerns (e.g., equipment, facilities) that may impact student safety to the principal.
