Communication and Collaboration

Establishing and maintaining a safe environment for school sponsored physical activities requires ongoing communication and collaboration.

Ongoing communication and collaboration related to safety can assist with the establishment of a safe, inclusive, and equitable learning environment for physical activity. This can be done by:

  • being proactive (e.g., identifying risks and managing them effectively, using the most recent OPASSE activity pages, following the specific safety standards under each component);
  • including ongoing learning opportunities for students (e.g., lessons/activities focused on encouraging and motivating students to take responsibility for their own safety and the safety of others; identifying risks at home, at school, and in the community; being aware of the signs and symptoms of a concussion etc.);
  • engaging students in safety awareness and processes (e.g., encouraging students to identify potential safety risks in the environment, equipment, or activities etc.); and
  • reflecting on successes and challenges after lessons/events (e.g., any safety concerns that arose, strategies needed to mitigate risks in the future etc.).
