Environmental Considerations
Special Rules/Instructions
- Safety rules associated with the activity must be clearly communicated to the students prior to participation and reviewed/enforced as necessary throughout the activity.
- Emphasize controlled movement when requiring students to move backwards.
- Communicate to students the importance of being aware of their personal space and location of other students around them in order to avoid collisions and/or being hit by equipment.
- Be aware of students wearing medical aids (for example, glasses, hearing aids). Make accommodations to include and protect students when participating.
- Students who are targets must be on their feet. Jumping to avoid a thrown ball and landing on their feet is permissible.
- Contact with the ball must be below the target's waist. Examples to assist in controlling flight direction of ball toward ‘below the waist’ and velocity of the throw are:
- Institute a rule whereby the ball must hit the floor/ground before it comes in contact with the target. Where any thrown ball does not hit the floor first and hits a target the thrower must move to another active part of the activity.
- Institute a rule where the thrower moves to another active part of the activity if the target is hit above the waist.
- Have throwers throw with their non dominant hand.
- Increase the throwing distance from the dividing line between the two teams.
- Where applicable (for example, Kings Court), give students the option to choose to be only the throwers.
- Establish clearly delineated boundary lines away from walls, stages, obstacles, using visual markers (for example, lines, pylons), to avoid contact/collision.
Supervision
- Direct Supervision is required when students are throwing balls.
