Fundamentals of Safety for Secondary Curricular Activities

The elementary module refers to grades 1 to 8 and the secondary module refers to grades 9 to 12. However, three activity pages apply to kindergarten: Wheel Activities, Movement Activities, and Playground Structures.

The statements in the Ontario Physical Education Safety Guidelines are not listed in any order of priority.

Curricular activity is defined as instruction of physical activity that occurs during Physical Education that can take place on school site or off school site. When considering an activity that is not included in this module and does not resemble an activity in this module approval from the appropriate school board official must be received. Once the activity has been approved by a school board official, the inherent risks of the activity must be identified and minimized.

Risk Management

The following must be taken into consideration by the teacher:

  • The activity is age-appropriate for the students’ abilities.
  • The teacher has the knowledge and ability in accordance with the safety guideline pages to teach and supervise the activity safely.

Parents/guardians need to be made aware of curricular activities in which their child is to participate and the risks inherent in the activities.
